Is it possible to have one person make such a profound impact on your life?
For us, that person was Scott Dinsmore, a man who changed our lives and encouraged us to live our passion every day.
Scott tragically died last weekend while climbing Kilimanjaro with his wife, Chelsea.
Scott was our mentor, our chief inspirator, and our friend.
How Scott moved us
Two years ago, I was starting my morning routine, relaxing with my yerba maté tea. I was listening to an inspiring interview on Good Life Project with Jonathan Fields when I became captivated by the words of the interviewee. Scott Dinsmore had so much energy and shared his goal — to help people live their passion and find work they love — so powerfully.
I immediately wanted to learn more. I checked out his Live Your Legend site and watched his inspirational TedTalk. I was completely hooked by his message. By the end of that day, I had signed up to his upcoming How To Connect With Anyone course, ready to absorb and learn.
During the first week of the course, I wanted so badly to contribute to his powerful movement. I reached out to Scott about the possibility of doing some video work together and within a few days, he responded, setting up a Skype chat. I was very surprised by this, and had assumed people like Scott, with a successful business and large community of followers, would never take the time for a one-on-one chat. He was genuinely interested in my ideas. It was then that we started a working relationship, which turned into a friendship.
Six months later, Dorene and I met Scott and Chelsea for the first time at an event in New York City. It was no surprise he had that same magnetic presence and insatiable energy for life that he conveyed online. This genuineness was an impression so many others have also shared about Scott.
The impact he made in our lives
We are completely different people from two years ago because of Scott Dinsmore.
We are open, encouraging, and living our lives courageously. We do what we love to do every day. How To Connect With Anyone got me out of my shell. I started creating action to move towards my dream life. Dorene took his courses and we became seriously involved in Scott’s Live Your Legend community in Toronto, where we met new life-long friends, which led to meeting others from Live Your Legend around the world. His vision created this incredible group of people who helped us to act, and in turn, we found joy in encouraging and supporting others with their dream careers. When we started our website and business, Scott was always encouraging us to keep on pushing through the challenges. Texts from Scott like, “Hey man! I love this, keep on going”, meant the world to us. I wonder if he knew how much those motivated us.
The world tours
We shared the love of travel with Scott and Chelsea and by coincidence, they planned to leave for a year of travel just weeks after we left to travel full-time.
Unfortunately, our travel schedule never intersected during the time we were away. We would often connect online during the last eight months to compare our travel plans, laugh about our travel joys, and the struggles — travel problems none of our friends would ever understand. During our last Skype call with Scott and Chelsea, we were in Bali and they were in a beautiful apartment in Atrani on the Italian coast. They were beaming and looked so peaceful. They had eased into their new life of adventure, travel, living and working from new locations, and we were all excited about sharing some new stories.
Hearing the news
Last Sunday morning at our cabin in Nicaragua, I woke up, went to the kitchen to make some coffee, and checked my email as I usually do. I noticed one from Chelsea, in the subject, “News on Scott”. I read the first sentence, put the phone down and went to the sink to fill the kettle. I was in shock and completely numb. I couldn’t believe what I just read. Since that moment, this week has been hell, with intense waves of emotions. Hearing stories about his impact from others around the world on the Facebook tribute page have been therapy, but this is no surprise. After all, this is about Scott, the man who created this powerful community.
To Chelsea and the Dinsmore family
There are no words to understand the devastation you are feeling each and every moment. We are so sorry for your loss, but so grateful Scott’s work and friendship came into our lives.
We are better people today because of Scott.
What legacy do you want to leave in the world?
Scott impacted millions of lives. Any of our lives could end anytime.
Scott reminded us this week how grateful it is to have this life, and have the opportunity to create a meaningful contribution to the world.
Thank you Scott. We will do everything to keep your spirit and legacy deeply within our lives and share it with others.
