Running Toward Long Term Travel

We’re 8 months into the planning of our new life, and our excitement is resonating with friends, family and colleagues every time we share our story and our plans.

I quit my job. I’m leaving in a week to focus on what’s important: planning our new life. Our life of long term travel. The comfort and security of a steady income doesn’t matter. Troy and I are both now in freelance/consulting mode to tide us over for a few more months.

How did someone like me, who is so conservative with work and money, get to this point?

It’s simple. I so strongly believe in our goal to redesign our lives that we’re making it work personally and financially.

We continue to meet and tell people about our plans, and whether it’s the guy who bought some of our furniture online, or colleagues asking how we’re going to manage, we’re marvelling in the great discussions. We’re hearing about others questioning whether they should also be taking their own risks and achieving their dreams! Awesome!

People also have a lot of questions. One of the most interesting questions I heard recently was:

“Why are you running away?”

It sounded like we were running away from the law! I couldn’t help but laugh when I first heard it.

I had to ask what the person meant.

They replied, “Is your life so terrible that you’re running away from your responsibilities?”

Hmmm. Interesting perspective. This person is clearly in a completely different place emotionally and mentally than we are. A comment like that didn’t squash our dream, but it did make me think.

We’re not running away. We’re running toward lives that are designed by us, lives that are lived on our terms.

Lives that include the travel we love, moving to other countries to experience a new way of life, and finding a way to make a difference. We’re accepting the challenges and new opportunities as they come.

So, what was my answer?

“Actually, you should rephrase that question. The real question is what are we running toward!”
